Protecting the Ocean: Individual commitment or collective strength? It is the combination of billions of individual actions and collective efforts that will create a significant impact for the preservation of the Ocean and our planet. Making a commitment and inspiring others to follow is a personal choice, but also a civic one, in favour of a more sustainable world for future generations. Artists and sportswomen, they have chosen to use their discipline to change our relationship with the Ocean and mobilise people around our shared responsibility. Find out in this episode how individual commitment can drive collective efforts. We look at visual artist Manon Lanjouère and wingfoiler Flora Artzner.

POLLUTION PLASTIQUE

PLASTIC POLLUTION

You shouldn't judge a book by its page count. Despite its 52 pages, this book says a lot about the health of our world and in particular the pollution affecting our oceans. This poetic manifesto is the first publication in the "Civis Maritimus" series from The Eyes, which will publish a photographic work on the relationship between humans and the marine world once a year. For this first opus, French photographer Manon Lanjouère takes her inspiration from the cyanotype herbariums so dear to Anna Atkins to depict the plastic pollution that is poisoning our oceans. She uses rubbish to reproduce endangered species.

MANON LANJOUÈRE

TAXONOMOE SOUS-MARINE

UNDERWATER TAXONOMY
A pioneer of the cyanotype in the Victorian era, botanist Anna Atkins might well be turning over in her grave when she discovers the taxonomy of the 20th century... To raise awareness of marine pollution, Breton artist Manon Lanjouère, born in 1993, has transformed a selection of rubbish dumped in the oceans into bioluminescent creatures. In this strange catalogue, cotton buds, yoghurt pots and ballpoint pens in an advanced state of decay appear as the mortal enemies of our ecosystem: plastic microparticles. Invisible to the naked eye, they invade the seabed with perfect discretion, slowly killing plankton, the first link in the food chain. On the frontiers of imagination and science, an intriguing vision of underwater hell.

(The Sleeping Sea,Teaching a Stone To Talk)2025-2026

experimental manifesto film 15’first screening in Les Champs Libres in Rennes from April 28th 2026

In La Mer Endormie (The sleeping Sea), an experimental manifesto film of 15’, Manon Lanjouère plays a woman who we imagine to be the last survivor of a world after a catastrophe. Alone on a deserted coast, she invents a ritual: collecting fossil fragments, traces of extinct species, then returning them to the ocean. Her gesture is twofold: rebellion against the destruction of life and care for what remains. With each throw, the stone, touching the water matrix, seems to come back to life. A vibration weaves between body, matter and sea, as if the dormant ecosystem were still whispering.

This work was born in the shadow of the sixth extinction, haunted by ecological urgency. Lanjouère draws inspiration from the ecofeminists of the 1970s, who had already sensed the coming ruin and countered fear with rituals of joy, songs, danced spirals, and a collective energy that reinvented hope. Their thinking permeates the film: here, putting one's body on the line is not about performing, but about affirming the possibility of repair, of a renewed connection to the Living.

The protagonist's actions are reminiscent of the ancient practices of shellfish gathering and seaweed harvesting, but in reverse: no longer taking, but giving back. This repeated, cyclical action becomes an endless task, an ecological Sisyphean labour. Yet, far from despair, she finds a solemn joy in it: as in Camus, the struggle itself gives meaning.

With a view to clean and environmentally friendly production, the chemicals usually required to develop film have been replaced by a mixture of seaweed and sea water, giving the images a unique aesthetic. The film, which focuses on the sea and its preservation, was made in close collaboration with the sea itself and the knowledge of Nina Cholet (movie director working on artisanal and eco-responsible development.)

The fixing of the images using sea water creates a crystallisation that gives the film a living quality.
Her protocol aims to link the creative act to the symbolism of life, placing the work within a scientific and poetic approach that symbolises the transition from inertia to life. The process becomes a material metaphor for the myth: seawater, as a primordial matrix, sculpts and transforms the film, an inert and rigid surface, into a crystalline and vibrant work.

La Mer Endormie is thus a fable of sensitive resistance, where art, gesture and the body become a force for repair, a call to relearn how to love the world before it withdraws.

Mémoire Sauvée de l’Eau, Le Temps Profond de la Mer
(Memories Rescued from Underwater, The Deep Time of the Sea)2025-2026

installation view in Les Champs Libres in Rennes from April 28th to September 27th 2026
Scenography : Manon Lanjouère with the supervision of Candice Rogers
Lumière : Arthur Scatton & Adrien Beaumont

With Mémoire sauvée de l’eau (Memories Rescued from Underwater), Manon Lanjouère opens a new oceanic chapter in her work and advocates here for recognition of industrial fishing’s role in the collapse of benthic* biodiversity (living on the ocean floor). This dystopian tale captures the full violence of deep-sea dredging, which acts like immense ploughing, repeatedly churning and stirring up the sandy or muddy layers. The species torn up, broken, crushed or discarded would find their final resting place beneath a layer of sediment, escaping immediate decomposition. Thus, far from human eyes, in the dark depths of the oceans, molecular transformations would take place over the centuries. Slowly but surely, the organic remains will fossilise, becoming the last witnesses to a little-known biodiversity that is essential to the balance of ecosystems. This installation, presented at Les Champs Libres, is distinguished by a conceptual framework that draws on the conventions of palaeontology to create a temporal and critical shift. Indeed, the ‘false fossils’ displayed in the exhibition space do not refer to a bygone past, but to a speculative projection of the future. This reversal gives the work a unique significance: it is no longer a matter of observing what has been, but of anticipating, in a materialised form, the possible traces of our present.

In this way, the installation gives substance to issues often perceived as abstract, particularly those linked to political inaction in the face of contemporary crises. By borrowing the forms and language of scientific evidence, it lends these hypotheses an air of factuality, as if the consequences of our choices—or our failures to act—were already recorded in a future archive. This strategy reinforces the work’s critical dimension, confronting the viewer with a reversed temporality in which the future acts as a revelation of the present.

The blurring of the lines between fiction and reality invites us to view our era as a layer still in the making, one that can be analysed in hindsight for its shortcomings. The artworks and the installation suggest that, without a political commitment commensurate with the stakes, this dynamic may paradoxically lead to a form of condemnation. In this sense, it offers a critical reflection on the limits of progress divorced from collective responsibility.

Paysages Sensibles
(Sensitive Landscapes)2023-2024

Paysages sensibles cyanotypes on Keaykolour recycled paper with moon dust particles 250g

Paysages sensibles provide the backdrop for the series Les particules, the human tale of dying water, a photographic manifesto for the preservation of ocean ecosystems. After revealing the invisible microscopic, the artist fantasises about underwater mountains and meadows, and confronts the political possibilities of landscape. In this world, where the notion of up and down has been turned upside down, an ecological drama is being played out against which the power of the imagination seems to be able to play a key role: that of learning to see in order to live together better. These underwater mountains, forests and meadows are veritable hotspots of ‘imaginary’ biodiversity, made up of photographs taken underwater or on the surface. The use of terrestrial references to represent underwater spaces aims to provoke a cognitive break: how can we preserve a place whose existence and richness are invisible to our eyes? These underwater ‘oases of biodiversity’, like the terrestrial ecosystems they refract, constitute the largest biotope in the world and are among the most exploited and least explored environments known to mankind. Underwater life is thus transformed by the reflections of a changing terrestrial world.

The regular grid pattern of the prints, reminiscent of scientific sampling campaigns or underwater archaeological digs, embodies man's attempt to understand and classify that which is beyond his control. This sequenced photographic process evokes both scientific research and the fragility of these landscapes in the face of climatic threats.
Paysages sensibles attempts to awaken environmental awareness, not through a naturalistic or documentary approach, but through a poetic reinvention of what a disappearing world might be. The work brings the viewer face to face with the invisible, allowing them to see the imaginary world of a changing environment, while at the same time making tangible the urgent need to preserve it.

P·O·E·M(

Particules de polyéthylène modèles pour l’étude des micro/nano- plastiques dans les océans)

2023

The P·O·E·M installation was designed for the Photoclimat 2023 biennial. This photographic sculpture, based on the series "Les Particules" , came about following a conversation with Ika Paul-Pont, a researcher in Marine Ecotoxicology at LEMAR, who specialises in the effects of micro- and nano-plastics on coastal ecosystems. backlit photos on cotton fabric, wood structure and plastic wave made of more than 200 plastic bottles thanks to the help of Cèdre Recyclons solidaire.

preparatory sketch

As a victim of our frugalism and the illusory recyclability of plastics, we dump eight million tonnes of them into the ocean every year. At this lightning pace, and without any real action on our part, the amount of plastic in the ocean is set to triple by 2050. According to the UN, the sea would then be home to more plastic waste than fish. Only 1% of the ocean's plastic waste is on the surface, while 99% is not found because it has sunk to the bottom, washed up on the coast or, above all, disintegrated. Plastics break down into smaller and smaller particles, forming microplastics smaller than five millimetres, which make up the bulk of plastic pollution in the ocean.
Some of these particles are assimilated by phytoplankton, unicellular organisms otherwise known as cyanobacteria and micro-algae. Representing less than 1% of the Earth's photosynthetic mass, these tiny aquatic plants are responsible for 30% / 40% of carbon dioxide absorption and more than 50% of oxygen production, a phenomenal and chilling figure given their vulnerability to micro-plastics. Once inside the bodies of these planktonic species, micro-plastics reflect the sun's rays and prevent photosynthesis, reducing production by up to 45%. In addition, the permeability of phytoplankton to microplastics represents a direct health hazard for humans and animals. It is one of the major routes of contamination through trophic transfer between the various links in the food chain. Because of their very small size, these particles slip through the net and unfortunately cannot be recovered. This research into plastic pollution and its impact on micro-organisms began on board the scientific schooner Tara and has continued with a conversation with Ika Paul-Pont, a researcher in Marine Ecotoxicology at LEMAR, who specialises in the effects of micro- and nano-plastics on coastal ecosystems. Throughout our conversation, I discovered that microplastics, which travel over a very long time scale, are carried by currents. Species, bacteria and pathologies settle on them, crossing gigantic swathes of ocean to end up on the other side of the planet, partly threatening the native species of the areas in which they end up. As a conductive material, plastic allows certain (cyano)bacteria and toxic algae to develop, but above all it is responsible for the transfer of data and genes between viruses and species.
The installation, which takes the form of a molecule and the DNA helix, evokes the idea that with plastic and chemical pollution, humans are changing the very essence of the ocean. The helix made from recycled plastic fragments is already showing some missing parts, those commonly known as "mermaids' tears". Taking on an organic appearance, this wave already shows a transformation of nature. In a gesture of repair, the plastic fragments are sewn together, inviting us to rethink our relationship with living things and the impact of human actions.

︎Manon Lanjouère forges spectral images that resemble a new nosology. Her classification of the mutations that transform underwater life forms into a repertoire of refuse borrows notably from the photographic iconography of plants in the early nineteenth century. ︎MICHEL POIVERT, PHOTOGRAPHY HISTORIAN AND CURATOR, INTRODUCTION EXERPT
Extracts of the ITW :
ADB Was it the fragility and beauty of these creatures, Manon, that inspired and motivated you?
ML Of course, and even more striking for me was the realization that they play a fundamental role in the balance of ecosystems, since phytoplankton – microalgae and cyanobacteria – carry out photosynthesis, absorbing CO2 and releasing oxygen. Imagining that this vital function for the planet, performed by wonderful and intriguing-looking creatures, was being severely compromised by plastic pollution, fired my imagination and fuelled the creative process that led to the Les Particules project.

IPP The fragility you mention is more than proven. Our research has demonstrated the impact of microplastics and nanoplastics on phytoplankton: by interacting with these living organisms, the pollutants modify their distribution in the water column and their floating speed, adhere to them and thus form aggregates that are toxic for the entire food chain, and worse, reduce their ability to photosynthesize by almost 45%. It’s invisible, and tragically harmful.
ADB Is your artistic process akin to scientific research?
ML Research, without a doubt. I’m not trained as a scientist, nor do I claim to be, but I find the sciences very inspiring, and they constantly nourish me.My projects are all framed by a protocol, on the basis of which I construct an image, as one would do in laboratory experiments. I then apply the process ad infinitum, and through this iteration, I wear out the form to the end.For me, laboratories are playgrounds!
︎The marvels of science and its literary fictions promised both knowledge and the illusion of mastery over nature. Now, however, waste is a species in its own right︎

While man found in water the naturally pure matter, we are now facing the crisis of the «impurity» of the oceans. The ocean, the cradle of our life, is slowly being transformed into a tomb for man, who will not survive on a planet with dying water. This natural beauty, tarnished by man, is gradually being transformed into an outlet for all kinds of waste. Assimilating so manysubstances, it absorbs all the colours, smells and flavours that man pours into it.Eight million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year, and at this rate, without any real action on our part, the amount of plastic in the ocean is expected to triple by 2050.According to the UN, there would be more plastic waste in the sea than fish. The plastics, whichbreak down into smaller and smaller particles, form microplastics, which due to their very small size, slip through the nets and unfortunately cannot be retrieved. We are facing a frenzy of activity of underwater life being suffocated by plastic, a new «vegetation» of nightmares. The Particles will then enter the immobile layer of the waters, to lift the shroud over the invisible beings, and to plunge the spectator into an abyss of reflection. With the creative image, I offer a new form to the destroyed world of tomorrow by reinventing its structure: plastic materials become the new representative form of microbiomes and plankton. Through the game of mimesis, I replace the real and anticipate a future through a projective image. Plastic waste, recovered from beaches and bins, allows me to reproduce these underwater species using a scientific and documentary approach, frontally on a cyanotype background. Inspired by Anna Atkins’ British Algae herbarium, or Ernst Haeckel’s sublime plates on The Artistic Forms of Nature, these productions are a dialectical tension between the sublime and the derisory of a nature damaged by the hand of man.A search for analogies between the material used and the form is developed: the emiliania huxleyi becomes a cluster of shower sieves, the guinardia striata a simple elastic hair tie, the asterionellopsis glacialis is made of cotton buds..This sort of apocalyptic prophecy shows a sublimated seascape, deliberately too soft, tooartificial, «nowhere does fresh nature breathe» (G. Bachelard). By examining with an attentiveeye, the viewer discovers little by little a repulsive whole and realises the deception he is facing. Like water splashed on the face, The Particles wishes to awaken this energy of seeing, transforming the gaze into a clear and easy action leading to a real awareness.

The Blue Marble
(Sensitive Landscapes)2019

UV print on blue marble. 40 x 90 cm slab taken from a split rock

Seen from space, the Earth is a ‘blue planet’, with seas covering 70% of its surface. This poetic image nevertheless masks the damage that these seas are suffering, even though awareness of the fragility of these environments is growing around the world. Our planet, suspended in the immensity of the cosmos, is both our refuge and our responsibility. Far from being a mere backdrop to our lives, it is a fragile ecosystem whose harmony is precious. As astronaut Jean-François Clervois explained to me, observing the Earth from space is a vision that brings with it a real ecological awareness, a realisation of its beauty, but also of its vulnerability. While we have long turned our gaze towards the sky, fascinated by the unknown, it's time to refocus our attention on what lies beneath our feet. The Blue Marble, a reference to the first shot of the Apollo missions' “earthrise”, is like an immense black screen on which the sky becomes a stunning projection surface that welcomes new aspirations and prompts us to rethink our relationship with our planet. Redefining our relationship with the Earth means relearning to respect it, to preserve it, to live in symbiosis with it. For while the lure of elsewhere has always nourished our dreams, our greatest journey should be the one that brings us closer to the Earth.

Reflecting the history of mankind, the space adventure was built on the dream of other worlds to conquer and inhabit. For centuries, it was reserved for fiction, but the 20th century saw the optimistic assumption that nothing would stop Man's technical ingenuity, his taste for progress, his thirst for knowledge and his ability to push back frontiers. Transforming the new human fantasy into a physical reality, Man set foot on the Moon on 21 July 1969, leaving an American flag for posterity, thus reproducing a very old European gesture of conquest. A literary and fictional motif par excellence, the Moon has been gradually transformed over the centuries into a new territory to be explored and mapped. But should the 'seventh' continent be conquered? In light of all the increasingly wild projects, such as exploiting resources on the Moon, living on Mars by 2030 or sending tourists into space, we can then question the future impact that Man's presence will have on these new territories.

If long-term space exploration lacks a future for humans, the same may not be true for the exploitation of extraterrestrial mineral resources, which may well provide sufficient motivation for industries to invest in and create lunar villages. Seriously considered, mineral drilling is not without ecological consequences on Earth, so will it have the same impact in an unknown environment like the Moon or other stars?

Inspired by the stories of the great discoveries of the 19th century, Memory of a Future proposes to exhibit an “outer space” fiction, an imaginary story showing the possible effects of space travel. While the astronomer was envisaged in the 17th century as the latest type of explorer, the long-distance traveller, making the analogy between the new world and the other world, Memory of a Future is inspired by the abundant iconography of the 19th century, which portrays the image of the explorer as an emblematic figure of society. Closely linked to the imaginary of which it is the vector, it can nevertheless be questioned because it reveals ambitions to appropriate the world. Taking up the constitutive features of the narratives of the world's discoveries, such as the mapping of "white" space, the full-length portrait in "travel suit", the stereotyped scenes of the walking column that portray exploration as an adventurous enterprise, and the iconography of the flag in the name of which the explorer treads on the ground, Memory of a Future shows that the discovery of the universe and the unveiling of the lunar and Martian surface as a symbolic appropriation will end up merging with the narrative of its actual appropriation through conquest. By adopting the position of a historian researching the archives, the project is built around the knowledge of our past to propose a fictional account of our future. This account of a journey to the Moon is then proposed as an alternative to the great stellar crusades, the consequences of which we do not yet know. From the American West, via Everest or Mount Cameroon, to the poles; the choice of reworked images as well as the new settings will attempt to raise awareness of future space projects.

Showing a new world that we discover without actually landing on it, Memory of a Future will attempt to affirm that fiction is a fundamental stimulus for man's understanding of his environment.

The Laboratory of the Universe questions our historical perception of the sky beyond the celestial vault, towards the Cosmos; that infinity imperceptible to the naked eye which, in the history of Man, has fuelled many fantasies. Like an huge black screen, the sky is an astonishing projection surface that welcomes our most futuristic aspirations and pushes us to ponder on our relationship with the Earth and the Universe. Always present above his head, the planets and stars have stimulated man's imagination, arousing in him the desire to reach them. Before the invention of the rocket, wasn't the imagination - a fantastic and inexhaustible field stimulated by the observation of the unknown - the source of scientist proposals? Has the call to dream suggested by a starry sky been futile since Neil Armstrong's first step on the Moon? And if we go back in time, what were the concrete means of observing the Universe? The fictions proposed throughout the series are to be considered as a mental model, a fundamental stimulus for the apprehension by men of his environment. Transforming myself into an "astronomical artist", I reproduce a descriptive art of the cosmos, setting itself up as a mimesis of the invisible and sharing a form of evolution of the visions of these distant worlds. Imagination becomes the raw material for the creation of an image conceived from abstract scientific data. Collages, archives, photographs, fragments of bottled asteroids, sculptures, ready-made assemblages and poetic writings, these productions are as much scientific research as they are artifice. Between scientific research laboratory, curiosity cabinet and objects that bear witness to a cosmic elsewhere, the project The Laboratory of the Universe thus seeks to make us lose our footing, inviting us to enter a poetic and fictional world punctuated by metaphysical questioning.Travelling thanks to the "wings of astronomy" (Abbé Moreux), the project, better than a spaceship, transports us indiscriminately to Saturn, an asteroid or a comet, and even to a planet whose existence we are still unaware of, and tends to remind us how much we need to imagine other lands at a time when we are in the process of "losing" ours. And our fantasy machine reminds us of these infinite spaces to divert us from this earthly explosion.
